Celebrating National Georgia Day in Peachtree's birthplace and state capital: Atlanta! Did you know there are 71 streets named "Peachtree" in ATL? Most people think the name comes from our state's fruit, but it actually has a deeper history than that. Georgia's land was once inhabited by the Creek and Cherokee tribes, and amongst their villages in the now Atlanta area was a location called Standing Pitch Tree - a major trading post between Native Americans and new settlers. Over time, mispronunciation of "pitch" became "peach" and the name evolved into Standing Peachtree. During the War of 1812, Fort Peachtree at Standing Peachtree and Fort Daniel were constructed and a road linking the two was named Peachtree Road.
